There are many people who are suffering from diseases where there is no looking back. Perhaps this motivates some of them volunteer (or participate) in medical research studies to help themselves and by and large other people.

Carrying out clinical trials

Clinical Trials are important to develop new treatment and offer hope for many patients

Recently the Yorkshire Post wrote an article about Teri Wadsworth who was suffering from Breast Cancer. Teri decided to volunteer  for a clinical trial of a new chemotherapy drug called Eribulin (Halaven) that comes from a sea-sponge and if used in conjunction with other medication, could possibly help stem her Breast Cancer.

Erubilin is only recommended for patients whose cancer has spread and who have undergone at least two previous chemotherapy treatments. It actually works by preventing the cancer cells from dividing and causing them to self-destruct, thus extending the lives of the patients.

As she was offered a chance to join the clinical trial of Eribulin. Once she started on the trial, her symptoms started to fall but when the dosage had to be reduced due to side-effects, the cancer returned.

However, despite the remission of her Breast Cancer, Teri believes that the treatment administered as part of the clinical study  has given her a reprieve. She says “If anyone is unsure about clinical trials they should consider them because it comes as a lifeline”.  You can read about the experience of other such cure heroes who have participated in a clinical trial

However, it should be noted that clinical trials may not be as successful but its totally upto the participant to decide to participate or not. Read more about benefits of participating in a clinical study, Process of clinical Study Randomization and other experience of being in a clinical trial.

If you want to enroll in a clinical study, you can use the clinical trial search provided by TrialX.com or visit ClinicalTrials.gov. These website provide information on most active trials for almost all disease conditions.
